Why We’re Leaning Into Streetwear at Nova Edge Threads

Streetwear is more than a fashion genre. It's a language, a rebellion, a community, and a history. This post is about giving much due appreciation.

The Roots We Respect

Streetwear wasn’t invented by fashion houses. In fact, Streetwear has saved Luxury brands. It was born in Harlem and was being shaped in Black and Brown neighborhoods— where creativity thrived in spite of systemic erasure and economic barriers. It came alive in the 1970s and ‘80s by communities often in opposition to mainstream and/or in the margins—surfers, skaters, graffiti artists, hip-hop rappers, lowrider clubs, punks, and rebels. The people who didn’t wait for permission to be seen or heard, especially Black Women. From the surf culture on the West Coast to Hip Hop culture on the East. From the waves of compelling art and storytelling to the do-it-yourself ethos of 80s punk— streetwear became a movement. It was never about fitting in. It was about standing out— streetwear is a story of identity and rebellion and creative expression.

We want to first acknowledge and then appreciate the creatives, subcultures, and communities that built this space long before it ever had commercial appeal. Here are ten foundational values of streetwear culture that we identify with:

1. Self-Expression Over Convention
Streetwear has always been a platform for personal truth. It’s about wearing your identity loud and proud—whether it’s through oversized silhouettes, resourceful and unexpected details, bold graphics, or fresh new remixes. It’s not about fitting in, it’s about standing out with something to say.

2. Authenticity Above All
Streetwear values realness. That means showing up with your own voice, your own story, and your own point of view. It’s rooted in the lived experiences of the subcultures that created it—skate, hip-hop, punk, and more—and thrives on the spirit of staying true to yourself and your roots.

3. Community Is Everything
This culture was never built by individuals alone—it was always collective. Crews, scenes, collectives, and chosen families made streetwear what it is. Whether it's your local skate spot, a niche online group, or an underground zine, community is what keeps the culture alive and the movement moving.

4. Resistance and Rebellion
Streetwear was born in resistance—to exclusion, to erasure, to being told you didn’t belong. It was ingenuity created in response to exclusion and it grew into a force of freedom. It’s always had something to say which wasn't what was on the menu in midstream. It’s not just clothing. It’s a stance.

5. Remix and Reimagine
Innovation is ever-flowing in streetwear. It's for the visionaries who had seen the bigger picture and did work to expand into something timeless. It's the power of collaboration that awe us and we're invigorated by the artistic combinations it produces. It’s about adding greatness to greatness to create something entirely new.

6. Diversity
Streetwear has always pulled inspiration from a range of subcultures and expanded globally through the decades. From Tokyo’s Harajuku streets to NYC boroughs, from Afro-Caribbean influence to Chicano lowrider style—diversity isn’t just present, it’s foundational. The best of streetwear celebrates cultural specificity, intersectional identities, and style that speaks from different voices and lived experiences.

7. Intentionality
Streetwear isn’t just about style—it’s about substance. At its best, it reflects the intention of its creators: their stories, resistance, visions, and daily realities. Designing with purpose, crediting where credit is due, and choosing homage over appropriation. It’s not about mimicking—it’s about meaning.

8. DIY Ethos
Streetwear is rooted in do-it-yourself spirit. Before there were global brands, there were handmade tees, zines, bootlegs, and hand-painted jackets. Even now, that underground energy is sacred. The ability to create from what you have and turn it into something meaningful is part of it's foundation.

9. Fluidity (Past x Present x Future)
Streetwear constantly samples from the past while remixing for the future. Vintage sportswear, retro graphics, classic silhouettes—reinterpreted through a modern or even futuristic lens. It’s a culture that thrives in the in-between—past memory, present reality, and future vision, all combined in interesting ways.

10. Cultural Commentary
Streetwear has always been a canvas for speaking truth—about politics, identity, oppression, and resistance. Whether it's through a loud T-shirt graphic, a symbolic patch, or a protest-inspired design, streetwear talks back. It’s wearable art with something to say. Not neutral and never silent.

At Nova Edge Threads, we believe it's important to acknowledge sources of inspiration (especially) when it was born from Black, Brown and Marginalized Communities.

We're Not Here to Claim—We're Here to Connect

We aren't here to claim ownership or space in streetwear. We’re not here to capitalize on a culture we didn’t build. We're here to make connections and bridge the gaps. We're everyday pride gear that prioritizes intersectional identities. The values of streetwear are woven into Pride without Limits. Similar to the roots of streetwear, the LGBTQ+ culture is only fabulous and fierce because of Black and Brown Trans Women, Butch Queens and those that could serve and read. Each part of who we are owes dedication and respect to the true creators.

Our collections are about more than aesthetics. They’re about story, expression and community. Modern LGBTQIA2S+ community as we know it today, has a ton of subcultures that don't necessarily interact but we can see the potential. What reigns true throughout is the importance of Pride, of Pride without Limits.

Streetwear reminds us that fashion doesn’t have to whisper; it can shout, scribble, confront, or refuse. It gives us a language to speak to the outsider, the nonconformist, the visionary in the crowd. Not just through design—but through energy. Through intent.

Here’s How We Give Back

At Nova Edge Threads, we don’t treat culture like a trend. We honor the originators by:

  • Redistributing 10% of our profits to community-led organizations, especially those prioritizing Black and Brown Trans and Disabled People.

  • Designing with cultural intention, not appropriation and being dedicated to ongoing improvement

  • Platforming underrepresented creators, voices, and stories.

Streetwear is more than fashion — it’s living legacy. We wear styles of it with gratitude, with reverence, and with a promise to never forget who built this.

This is a thank you.
This is a commitment.
This is limitless pride that gives back.
